CCU – Swain Science Building Annex
About Project
Coastal Carolina University’s Kenneth E. Swain Science Hall is a 40,000 s.f. building that houses classrooms, labs and faculty for the biology, chemistry, environmental science and health promotion curricula. The building contains a herbarium and walk-in cold storage rooms for experiments that require controlled temperatures. The complex monumental entrance from ornamental metals presented a welcome challenge to Peachtree as we worked to create a custom cornice in aluminum plate, perforated aluminum panels and column capitals. The very intricate sunscreens feature a design that uses several small components that are integrated to produce an end product that appears to be suspended from above.

The aluminum cornice and column capitals are constructed from multiple extruded and plate aluminum components and then finished with stainless steel hardware to present an industrial appearance. The perforated panels are supported by building steel structure that is clad with custom formed plate aluminum and the sunscreens are configured in such a manner as to have them appear as though they are suspended from above.
